“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
Mark 4:26-29 (NKJV)
The Lord Jesus gives us a natural example of a seed to illustrate how the kingdom of God springs to life and grows. A simple yet profound explanation of what the kingdom of God is like and how it operates.
Just like a farmer plants a seed in the ground in order to reap a harvest. Likewise, we need to plant the incorruptible seed of the Word of God in our hearts and minds if we desire to receive and taste of its fruit harvest.
Everything we see in this natural world started life as a seed. All living creatures including human beings came by way of a seed. It is the same in the kingdom of God. Every blessing made available to us through the grace of God comes in the form of a seed. Jesus explained that what seed is to this natural world, so is the Word to the kingdom of God. Nothing functions in the kingdom without the Word of God.
There are all kinds of spiritual seeds (principles and values) within God’s Word. When these seeds are planted in our hearts and nourished, they will produce a harvest of spiritual, emotional, physical, and material blessings.
Peter teaches us that the Word is the incorruptible seed of God, which lives and abides forever (1 Peter 1: 23). Peter goes on to explain that the promises of God are given to us in a seed form. If they are planted, they have the ability to produce everything we need to live a victorious and abundant life (2 Peter 1:3-4).
